The ‘five-year rule’

The five-year limit to complete the vocational component of Bar training applicable to students who started in September 2020 or later.1

This is when the ‘new’ vocational component was introduced e.g. BTC, BVS. It does not apply to predecessors e.g. BPTC, BVC.

  • Cardiff University
  • City St George’s University of London
  • Inns of Court College of Advocacy

  • Northumbria University
  • Nottingham Trent University

Disabled students

Disabled students are both less likely to complete2 and underrepresented on the vocational component of Bar training. The latter has remained at about 10% since 2015/163 compared to 25% of the UK’s working age population.4

Expired students

Students who have not completed the vocational component before expiry of the five-year period. The September 2020/21 cohort is the first to reach expiry (in September 2025).
